NSLI-Y 2024 Korea – Week 5
Weekly Announcements 📰📢
Are you in a dire emergency and need help? In the United States, you should call 911. However, in South Korea, the emergency number to dial is 119!
NSLI-Y students pose for a selfie in a surprise visit from South Korean police officers (경찰).
What are we learning? 📚✏️
This week, our advanced class finished the first book of SNU’s “I Love Korean” (사랑해요 한국어). Some topics that we learned this week include adjectives such as “fun” (재미있다), which we can use to describe our Korean language classes here at Dankook University (단국대학교). Our students also learned how to tell the time and count past one million!
Class 2 students: Abby, Karen, Jude, Hazel, Hanan, Jake and Stephan pose with their teacher (선생님) and a class assignment about their houses and how to describe them.
Andrea and Enzo are practicing Korean adjectives and sentence grammar on the whiteboard with their teacher (선생님).
Emilio, Gigi and Andrea practice counting by playing a game of “Store and Customer” with their teacher. They can now count over one million in Korean (백만)!
Enzo masters his counting skills with an engaging activity during our weekly peer partner meeting.
Jude and his peer partner practice counting with a supermarket flier comparison activity.
Andrea practices her conversational skills by recording a live conversation with her peer partner, a Dankook University Student.
Movie Packed Week 🎬🍿
Would you choose classic, cheese, or caramel-flavored popcorn?
The Yongin cohort attends a NSLI-Y planned movie viewing at a local CGV Cinema. We watched a movie (영화) in full Korean with no english subtitles. Picking up words throughout the movie, we laughed along with the locals as we watched “Pilot” (파일럿).
Karen, Emilio, Lorenzo and Andrea watching “Despicable Me 4”, also known as “Superbad 4” (= the movie’s title in Korea!).
Doris and her host mother watching “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
Caribbean Bay Weekend 🏖️☀️
This weekend had the hottest days we’ve experienced in the last five weeks, with a temperature of 95 degrees fahrenheit or 35 degrees celsius (South Korea uses celsius!).
Jake, Abby and Stephan cool down with their Korean mentors, Nayeon and Joeun at Yongin’s very own waterpark, Carribean Bay!
Doris, Hanan, Hazel and Hanan’s host sister hold on to each other as they traverse through Carribean Bay’s Lazy River.
Host Family Hangouts 🤍
Our host families now feel like our second families. Here are some photos of students cherishing their final full weekend together.

Author’s Remarks ✌🏻
Mixed feelings fill us as this chapter in week 5 comes to an end. Balancing our classes and final projects, learning more Korean language at Dankook, and spending time with our host families and peers are all overwhelming, but it’s what makes this experience unforgettable. Fellow cohort mates, let’s take everything step by step and make the most of our next and final week here!
