NSLI-Y Korea 2022 – Week 2
This week, we visited the May 18th museum and learned about Gwangju’s history.
In May of 1980, the South Korean government declared martial law in all areas of the country: closing universities, prohibiting political activities and curtailing the press. In response, students and citizens in Gwangju rose up in protests that were brutally suppressed by military forces. Gwangju suffered heavily under Chun Doo-hwan’s military government and many citizens were sacrificed. This incident became one of the most significant turning points in the history of South Korea’s democratization.

A Birthday Surprise
Brandon’s birthday happened this week and his fellow students prepared a big surprise party for him. It was a wonderful time!

Host Family Day
The students had the opportunity to be paired with a local host family for a day. As the students are living in dorms for the program, this allowed them an excellent chance to learn about normal life in Gwangju and practice their growing skills in the Korean language.
