NSLI-Y Korea 2022 – Week 3
Cultural Activity
On Saturday we had our cultural activity where the students painted in a traditional Korean style. It was a fun and engaging time and the students even got to practice their Hangul (Korean characters) as they signed their names on their masterpieces.

Resident Director Lesson
During our weekly RD meeting, we discussed Korean music history and related it to high school music curriculums in Korea as well as the worldwide craze for KPop (Korean pop music). Students were able to identify traits of music education in Korea and compare the differences with American music curricula.
Students also had the chance to participate in a mock version of the widely popular and globally adapted Korean singing competition I Can See Your Voice.
Traditional Korean music.
Peer Language Partner Activity
Because of a close contact with a COVID positive individual, our Peer Language Partner activity was conducted virtually.
Students were tasked with locating a specific “secret place” on the university campus. The student’s Peer Language Partner was given the name and location of that place and described where it was and how to get there in Korean. The students had to listen to their partner’s instruction and find the location using the map.
Peer Language Partners gave directions to students while referring to the location and the surrounding map.
Students recorded the process of following their partner’s direction and submitted the video.
It was not easy but students had a lot of fun. The first person to locate the secret place received a prize—two mangoes!!
Students got a chance to immediately apply their Korean learning to their daily lives. Learning about food and grocery store vocabulary last week helped Gabby work through her Korean boxed lunch!
