4 weeks in and this week was no less busy for our hardworking NSLI-Y students! As the trip nears its end, the students have been having more homework on top of their culminating projects which they started interviews for this week! The students’ topics span everything from environmental issues and healthcare policy to family structure and religion in Chinese society! It will be very interesting to see them present their final products in the last week of the program!

As for this week’s activities, the students learned some new Chinese songs (they seem to be getting progressively more modern, which is cool), practiced some traditional(ish) paper cutting, visited a local hospital to meet the staff and some of the sick children living there, and sang their hearts out at a local KTV! (karaoke place)

The students had the opportunity to visit a local hospital to meet some of the kids living in the hospital. They bore small gifts and even sang a few songs for the little ones! The kids seemed to really enjoy having others there, even though the students had limited time with them. Altogether a very gratifying experience!

After a rather somber hospital visit, the students had the opportunity to go to a local KTV to sing some good old karaoke. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it, and the class even enjoyed a few solos from their very own Teacher Chen! Karaoke is a very popular activity for local Chinese, and the students seem to be assimilating well to it!

Students Jacob, Nina, and Jovanna working on their paper-cutting pandas! This takes a lot of time, care, and finesse to say the least.

The Baby Dragon class (Audra, Easton, Jacqueline, Stephanie, Gillian, Benjamin, Jacob, and Amaya) posing with their favorite paper cut-outs!

The Big Dragon class (Cameron, Kayden, Sam, Cole, Nina, Maureen, Logan, Phillip, Jovanna, Johannah, Linnea) with their best creations as well! So many pandas!

Students Audra, Phillip, Nina, Kayden, Maureen, Linnea, and Johannah singing and playing guitar for the children! I believe the song was “Hey There Delilah”!

Prior to meeting the children, the students were formally welcomed to the hospital by the staff. The students also got to personally meet and talk with many of the staff in Chinese.

The students (Benjamin, Sam) also brought some small gifts like candy and snacks to give to the kids. They really enjoyed it!

Benjamin, Stephanie, Jacob, Johannah, Phillip, Gillian, Logan, Maureen, Amaya, and Jacqueline watching in awe as their very talented Teacher Chen knocks out some of those high notes. He should really go pro.

Maureen and Johannah giving everyone their own solo! Almost everyone was able to show off a little of their singing expertise.
